World’s Most Expensive Coffee Goes on Sale in Dubai

World’s Most Expensive Coffee Goes on Sale in DubaiIcons Coffee Couture Dubai, which opened its doors in November of 2013 and is located on the First Floor, Souk Al Bahar, now debuts the world’s most expensive coffee, kopi luwak.

Kopi Luwak is also known as “Civet Coffee.” It is extremely expensive, yet high in demand. It may seem as an odd combination, but Icons Coffee Couture is not you every day café chain either.

The new UAE-based coffee company Icons café, which also serves organic coffee and tea, along with other health foods, currently sells kopi luwak coffee. What’s peculiar about this coffee is the way it’s processed. In fact, it is made from the beans of coffee berries that have been eaten and excreted by the Asian palm civet. Despite the unusual processing, this wild-sourced cup of espresso is considered the world’s rarest coffee beverage.

Civets (Paraxorus Hermaphroditus), which has a broadly cat-like general appearance, are nocturnal forest animals that freely prowl nearby coffee plantations and are unable to digest the berries that are expelled, then, along with the rest of their droppings. In other words, the coffee beans are excreted in their feces in which locals will pick out the beans. Although the aroma of the beans may not be that appetizing, the internal fermentation (colonizing bacteria in the civet’s digestive track) and the proteolytic enzymes that seep into the beans add a unique flavor to them after having gone through the dried and roasting part, coffee experts say. Consequently, this is regarded as one of the best coffees in the world.

Research findings concluded that although they are significantly more contaminated than regular beans, having undergone the fermentation process makes them healthful and nutritious as well as perfect to produce a delicious drink.

Icons café is not going to replace its regular blend, its “iconically sweet, ironically healthy” coffee drink, but will now also sell the expensive, kopi luwak coffee. Priced at Dhs 180 (US$49) for two cups, are you ready to enjoy an exclusive coffee experience from a classic brewing company?

There is nothing like Civet Cat Poop Coffee, says Elena Weber, CEO at ICONS WORLDWIDE. The drink is currently marketed as the “Drink of the Emirates.”
