Last Saturday, June 28, the Soffio Fast Rigid Inflatable Boat (RIB) 31 Carbon established a new speed record while covering the 15.40 nautical miles that separate Naples and Capri in 16’39. The crew of the Soffio Fast Rib, composed by members of the Circolo Canottieri Napoli Christian Segnini and Giovanni Di Meglio, was pleased with the performance.
The Soffio 31 boat was given the green flag at 7 a.m. When they finished the Naples-Capri route, the pilots from the HPR racing team came up just short of their projected time. They believe they gave 100 percent but did note that the conditions of the sea (rough, choppy) kept them from clocking in a better time and meet the 15’ mark that was their target. In the end, their cruising speed was about 67 mph thanks to the twin 300 Suzuki HP outboard engine; it was a great speed (although not the maximum possible) considering the conditions of the waters in the Gulf of Naples last Saturday. Safety was ensured by members of the Bergamo Scuba Angels: Paolo Mesiano, Nicola de Corato and a doctor were on the rescue boat; Fabrizio Boffi followed the RIB in a helicopter.
The Soffio 31 drivers were pleased with the challenge set up for them and happy to have marked the first “Long Distance Offshore World Record.” Hopefully, the competition will become a yearly event with international appeal. The event mirrors a very common practice among Neapolitan boaters who, on weekends, gather at the seafront in Naples Gulf Harbor to participate in unofficial racing across the sea to the islands.
Soffio 31, an exclusive 9.40-meter rigid-hulled inflatable boat that combines Italian style and design, featuring modern and reliable technologies with the highest quality materials, is amongst the fastest RIBs. It has already been used in competitions and is last year’s European Cup winner; Saturday’s “Napoli – Capri in un Soffio (Naples-Capri in a Breath)” event proved that the Soffio Fast Rib award-winning team was also up to the speed challenge. Although it came up short this time around, its race against time has, nevertheless, made history.
