Diego Armando Maradona, the Argentine legend footballer and one of the best players of the game, is no stranger in the UAE; in fact, he was appointed manager of Dubai club Al Wasl FC in the UAE Pro-League for the 2011–12 season. That same year, he was appointed Dubai Honorary Ambassador of Sports in shaping the future generation of Emirati footballers; in 2013 that contract was renewed by the Dubai Sports Council (DSC) for another year. Maradona, through his time here, has been the director (supervisor and mentor) to help improve the football academies in the emirate for youngsters between 12 and 16.
Today, Diego Maradona resides in Dubai, where he has a home. Before coming to the emirates, he was an unsettled man not serene due to problems with drugs and lawsuits, etc., but living in the UAE has brought change in him, a peace and calm into his life that he says was brought by “the Emiratis in particular and the Arab people in general.” This was noted in an interview with Arabic daily Al Ittihad.
In recent time, he has managed to clean-up his act and become a beloved resident of the country he chose as second home. Admirers of Diego Maradona may just run into to him while in the emirate.
Though Maradona may be out of shape, he can be seen playing now, away from the training field in Dubai kicking, dribbling and balancing while keeping up a soccer ball non-stop for several minutes; it just goes to show his love of the game continues to this day.
Maradona is back on the field at the age of 55; it ‘happened in Dubai, where the Pibe de Oro, with the number 10 on his back and the captain’s armband, took part in a football tournament for veterans organized by Dubai Sports Council,” noted Il MATTINO, which is a newspaper from Naples, Italy. Success of his ‘Café Diego’ team meant giving a 6-1 score to their opponents. Pictured alongside Diego, also the Neapolitan Stephen Ceci, who has been handling his business for several years. To him, days like these on the field playing football are his finest moments! This debute in a veteran’s tournament in Dubai proved he still had his amazing Football (Soccer) Skills / Tricks, and people got to see his goals/dribbles once again on the field.
Apart from football, Maradona has gone on to launch his first sports café in Dubai, which features “themes from many football greats, not just Maradona,” told Arabian Business. Other than the “Maradona Sports Cafe” in Dubai, he also notarized a contract with a leading jewelry retailer; the “Boby and Maradona Gold Diamond Jewellery” outlet (Sharjah Showroom), his latest signed deals as a businessman.
