Pope Francis’ Holy Year – Jubilee of Mercy

The Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy, coming soon, excludes no one, and opens to other religions and non-believers. For all, there is sure to be “the certainty of being welcomed.” This Holy Year of Mercy promises to be a faith-sharing experience not to be forgotten.

The Doors of Mercy of Saint Peter’s Basilica will be opened for the duration of the Jubilee and pilgrims will walk through it to renew their faith. The Holy Father said: ‘This is the time of mercy.’ A Re-awakening for all Christians. (Source: Vatican Information Service)

The opening ceremony of the Jubilee Extraordinary is scheduled on December 8, 2015 (the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception) and the ending on November 20, 2016 (the solemnity of Christ the King). Between these two dates there is a calendar of various events that will take place in the Vatican state as well as around Rome.

Note: The official website for the Jubilee (www.iubilaeummisericordiae.va) presents the Major Events and the Jubilee Calendar.

This historical event of particular importance marks the fiftieth anniversary of the closing of the Second Vatican Council and has a strong spiritual meaning: to deepen their faith with the merciful God who invites everyone to return to Him. It will begin with the opening of the Holy Door at St. Peter’s on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. Once the Holy Door is opened, other traditional Jubilee Churches will then open in the following days.

The celebration of the Holy Year is a time to “rediscover the richness encompassed by the spiritual and corporal works of mercy.” The faithful take their passage through the Holy Door in hope the mercy of God is able to transform their hearts. Those expected to arrive in Rome for the extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy may experience a series of delays on public transportation, but hopefully no more strikes of airline personnel. Emirates will be ensuring continuous communication with Rome for the Holy Jubilee Year of Mercy with Emirates Airbus A380 daily flights to and from Rome Fiumicino airport (FCO) and Dubai.

For security, there will be several airport-like security gates at the entrance in Rome in wake of Libya and France crisis. Terrorism in Rome is a possibility, as Rome is now on alert after an ISIS threat, so expect an increased security presence who will be on guard against potential terrorist attacks during the Jubilee Year of Mercy. Italy’s interior minister Angelino Alfano has decided to send Italian troops (700 soldiers) to Rome after Isis has made numerous threats to attack the Italian capital.
