The Middle East Film & Comic Con (MEFCC) ended this weekend and, as expected, it was a huge success. The event was the MENA region’s most anticipated counter culture expo and largest pop cultural festival. It is now at its fourth edition. Once again, the event brought together celebrities, artists, music, art and exhibitors from across the globe. Many attendees said they had a great time during the three-day event at Dubai World Trade Centre.
Part of the events was two competitions that actively involved the public and added to the fun atmosphere that was created for visitors. The art competition was open to participants that wanted to showcase their pieces. Entries had to have an element of Middle East incorporated into the artwork.
Even more intriguing was the cosplay competitions where participants could cosplay as their favorite Marvel characters for prizes and lots of fun. In between the many characters a known figure was spotted. Was Johnny Depp cosplay back? Most definitely! Nico de Corato, owner and web-administrator at DubaiBlog and AbuDhabiBlog, was at the Comicon and decided to join in the fun by cosplaying an incredible Edward Scissorhands perfectly resembling Johnny Depp in the Tim Burton film.
Thanks to Mary Samele, a Makeup Artist and Special Effect Specialist, and Mr. Ben’s Costume Closet a vibrant, exciting and fun-filled costume shop located in Dubai, the appearance of Nico as cosplay character Edward Scissorhands was memorable. Already in 2013 and 2014, Nico had performed, with the help of Mary Samele for the makeup and Mr. Ben for the costume, as Jack Sparrow cosplay.
Nico’s costume is amongst many that took part of the MEFCC 2015 Cosplay Competition for Best Movie Character. Others dressed as their favorite Marvel characters for a chance to win prizes, according to each of the six groupings:
1. Best Movie Character
2. Best Animations Character?
3. Best Comics Character?
4. Best Video Game Character?
5. Best Marvel Character
6. Best Group
Many of the characters were brought to life by Mary Samele. At the Cosplay stand, she got people portraying unusual characters looking as if they were the real ones through make-up and face paints. She also held a workshop during the event on April 10 on how to create realistic looking burns that are perfect for Halloween and cosplaying or those crazy dress-up parties.
DubaiBlog, a media partner of the event has been a constant supporter of MEFCC for a number of years! Who knows if Johnny Depp will be back next year…
