Yves “Jetman” Rossy is a legendary daredevil who is often seen in flight with a jet engine-powered wing strapped to his back and a customized wingsuit while conquering the skies over Dubai. The 55-year old Swiss ex fighter pilot and aviation enthusiast says he has discovered human flight is possible using a winged jetpack, equipped with mini engines.
He is known as the first person to fly a jet engine-powered wing, a system powered by four Jet-Cat P200 jet engines modified from large kerosene-fueled model aircraft engines. The ’Rocketman’ soars through the skies using also a pair of 8ft wings. Steering with his body, Rossy is able to go from freefall (being launched from a plane or helicopter that travels up to a height of about 1,800 meters) into a gentle glide, while leaving a trail of special-effects smoke in his wake before descending and then landing as a parachutist. As soon as he jumps out of the helicopter, Rossy then turns on the jets and increases their thrust power with a small hand-held control for forward motion; the steering controls are his hands, head and legs, he said.
The harness mounted with four kerosene-powered jets device was created by Yves himself; the fabricated wings are carbon fiber and Kevlar and are capable of a combined 88 kilograms of thrust that allow his to reach 306 km/h. Until now, no one has been able to reach that speed in such an apparatus, nor do the same things he can. His ability to jump out of a small aircraft with a pair of jet-powered wings on his back and execute a perfect 360-degree roll is astonishing!
Rossy has taken his jetpack around the world, but thanks to the support of SkyDive Dubai and XDubai, his new sponsor, he is taking a new step as “JETMAN Dubai,” pushing the boundaries of aviation by taking flight with a jet-propelled wing to a completely new level!
Now in the UAE, Yves is seen practicing complex maneuvers such as loops and flying in formation with small airplanes, while also improving his aerobatic abilities. This is now a full-time job. The synergy between Dubai and Jetman was easy to see when he completed a sensational formation flight with Aerobatics Champion Veres Zoltán in Dubai last year. There is a YouTube video clip of the experience.
Today, the ‘Jetpack Man’ is changing perceptions of what is possible in human flight. This former fighter and commercial pilot has dedicated himself to experimental flight in all its forms and by manipulating his body as an extension of the wings and adding propulsion to pull off an amazing flight. Rossy has opened the door to countless new possibilities, as he has been working constantly to optimize his wings’ handling and performance.
Yves Rossy and his wife who moved to Dubai over a year ago are happy to say they now call the emirate city their new home. The couple was looking for a change of lifestyle and a place where there is plenty of opportunity for leisure activities. These days, Rossy can be seen soaring through the sky with a jet-propelled, carbon fiber wing of his own invention strapped to his back where he is either pulling off new stunts or is admiring the panoramic views of Dubai’s iconic landmarks. “The infrastructure that is in Dubai and the spirit is just perfect,” he says.
In his spare time, Yves “Jetman” Rossy is found pursuing his other interest: skydiving, another adrenaline rush hobby. As for the future of JETMAN Dubai in the future, no one knows for certain, but he envisions a world where people will use jetpacks to travel. Rossy’s wing suit is truly an innovative and unique piece of gear that might help make this a reality.
